Kitten CATastrophe!

One of my friends at school lives on a farm and one of the farm cats had kittens. After a lot of persuading, Mum and Peter eventually agreed that we could give them a home - provided that I took full responsibility for them. They came home this morning and I let them out of their carrying boxes in my bedroom. We decided that, for the time being at least, while they need to be kept indoors (because they might get lost and they haven't had their vaccinations yet) they have to stay upstairs in my room. This is because downstairs we have to allow doors to be open for long enough for Jonah's wheelchair to get through. anyway, I expect an electric wheelchair would be frightening for kittens. I thought that I'd kitten-proofed my room, but I hadn't taken into account the old gas fire, which wa still there in the fireplace even though, now that we've got central heating, we never use it. It turns out that there's a hole at the back for the gas fumed to go up the chimney. It was only small, but the kittens managed to get through. we had to get a gas fitter out to remove the fire to get them out again. And then Peter had to spend the rest of the day bricking up the fireplace to keep them out of the chimney. I don't think I'm his favourite person at the moment!

Two kittens

On the left you can see Sooty and Smutty looking rather sheepish after we got them back down from up the chimney! You can see Smutty's smutty nose!

On the right they are watching Peter trying to repair the damage.

I was planning to name the kittens Annie and Clarabel, but after this little escapade, I've decided that they will be called Sooty and Smutty.
