Andy came round for tea again today. We were all very careful with lateral flow tests beforehand and keeping our distance while conversing, so we hope nobody will go down with COVID as a result of mixing. We were all keen to hear the latest on the Jibrilu Danjuma murder case – and perhaps even more keen to hear how Andy and his Mum are getting on now that Yakubu Danjuma is in the country.

Apparently Yakubu has taken a PCR test and may be released from self-isolation any time now, provided the result comes back negative. Andy’s worried that he’ll want to go and meet his mother in person as soon as he gets out, despite having had a Zoom meeting with her on Friday in which she apparently made it clear to him that she wanted nothing to do with him. Unfortunately, Andy let slip where she works, so he could stalk her if he’s really determined.

Jibrilu’s killers have more-or-less confessed, although their version of events may not be totally accurate, which is good. The chances are that only one of them will be convicted, and he may mange to persuade the jury that it was only manslaughter, because he never meant his knife wound to be fatal. Gabriel Sibanda was a real star managing to pick them all out from a line-up of photographs and giving such clear evidence about what they aid and did to him before Jibrilu stepped in to send them packing. They’ve been charged with various racially-aggravated crimes in relation to their behaviour towards him, which should ensure they get custodial sentences even if not for the attack on Jibrilu.
