The Methodist Conference is debating the “God in Love Unites Us” report today. There are about ten different motions arising from it, including the crucial one that would allow churches to choose to register to conduct same-sex marriages. All but one (Shetland) district has voted in favour of all the proposals, so you’d think it ought to be straightforward, but there are a few amendments being tabled and the “Methodist Evangelicals Together” pressure groups has been mounting a rear-guard action predicting mass defections amounting to a major schism if the proposals go ahead. I’m not sure when the results will be announced. There’s a second debate scheduled for Wednesday; so probably nothing will be decided until then. We’re all getting quite nervous about it. I know that Dean would like to have a church wedding to “upgrade” their civil partnership, so here’s hoping …
