Eva's had news from a friend in Halle that Helmut has died in custody. She's absolutely distraught about it - for a moment I was afraid she might decide to go back to see to his funeral, but I managed to persuade her that he would want her to stay here safe, and to make a future for Martin in the West. We weren't planning to tell Martin - at least not until we'd had confirmation - but he overheard us talking, so we had to explain it all. He's taking it very quietly. I don't know whether that's a good sign or not.
