Bernadette Fazakerley (“Our Bernie” to her friends) left her home city of Liverpool for Oxford in 1976. There she gained a first Class degree in Mathematics and a fiancé, Stephen. That was the point in her life when things started going wrong. Stephen killed himself by jumping from a high building. Bernie, unable to shake off the suspicion that Stephen had been unable to face life with her, buried herself in her academic work. Soon she obtained a doctorate and a tutorial fellowship at St Luke’s College.

It is only many years later, when her daughter Lucy (the product of her late marriage to a Detective Superintendent in Thames Valley Police) reaches her teens that Bernie thinks of returning to her childhood home and her few remaining relatives. In Mystery over the Mersey, we follow Bernie, Lucy and Bernie’s second husband, Peter, as they make a long-awaited visit to Merseyside. It is not long, however, before the holiday turns into an adventure, when they become witnesses to a murder aboard one of the iconic Mersey Ferries and the remainder of their stay is spent helping the police with their enquiries.

A year later, Bernie’s Aunty Dot summons them to return to Liverpool once more. A death has occurred in the Care Home where she lives and she is worried that the police have got the wrong suspect. In my Liverpool Home records the investigation in which Bernie’s good friend, DCI Jonah Porter, eventually solves the mystery and the real culprit is brought to justice – but not without plenty of excitement and false trails in the way!

This compilation contains the full text of both stories and, as an added bonus, more than thirty original photographs of Liverpool, not included in the individual e-books. I hope that you enjoy reading these stories and learning more about Liverpool and its people.
