It’s Lucy’s birthday – a very strange birthday, with her in Liverpool and us not able to visit. There used always to be a good chance that it would be a holiday. With it being so close to Mayday, three days out of seven were either a weekend or a Bank Holiday. So we’ve never been apart up until now.

She had a Zoom birthday party. Joey and Ruth joined in, using the tablet computer that Dom persuaded them to buy. Dom and Ibrahim baked a cake and iced it in Liverpool colours. Because it’s Ramadan, they had to wait until after sunset to eat it. We all watched Lucy blow out the candles and then we had a sort of birthday iftar. We bought some dates specially, because that’s the traditional first thing that Muslims eat when they break their fast.
