Home again! To my surprise, when we arrived back we found Father Damien in the living room deep in discussion with Jonah about the sacrament of reconciliation ("confession" to most lay-people). He'd come round to have a chat with Peter and Jonah ambushed him. Predictably, Jonah was holding the fort for protestant rejection of the need for the intervention of a priest in odrder to obtain forgiveness from God. I think he was surprised (and probably a bit annoyed) that Father Damien agreed with him on almost every point. and then he dealt a killer blow by pointing out that, just because a priest wasn't necessary for obtaining God's forgiveness it didn't mean that there wouldn;t be people out there who find it hard to believe in that forgiveness without assurance from someone on authority in the Church. I think that Jonah was almost convinced! Father Damien must be a glutton for punishment, because he left with a promise that he'll come back next Sunday prepared to tackle the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church towards homosexuality. Now that really will be a hot potato!
