Regroup numbers in different forms (Reasons about quantity)
Partition numbers to 1 billion in non-standard forms
Whiteboards or student workbooks
Place value houses
Marker or pencil
4 digit numbers to display
Activity set-up
Provide students with blank place value houses or students can draw a place value table.
Ensure students are arm-width apart to move safely.
Teacher states and displays a number up to 1 billion.
Students read the number and partition the number on whiteboards or in workbooks.
Students use physically active movements to show the value of each digit in the number:
Billions - arm dips
Millions - sit ups
Thousands - push ups
Hundreds - star jumps
Tens - squats
Ones - High knees
If the number was 1234, students would complete 1 push ups, 2 star jumps, 3 squats and 4 high knees.
Encourage students to partition the number in as many non-standard forms as possible, eg. 12 star jumps, 3 squats and 4 high knees.
Play using smaller or larger numbers
Play using decimal numbers.
Vary the physically active movements used
Partition the number before or after, 10 more than or 10 less than the stated number
