Home > Stage 2 > Partitioned fractions > Make a whole
Model and represent unit fractions, and their multiples, to a complete whole on a number line
Determine the complementary fractional part needed to complete one whole (halves, quarters, eighths, thirds) (Reasons about relations)
Recreate the whole unit from a fractional part (1/2, 1/4 , 1/3 and 1/8)
Outdoor playing area
Post-it notes or fractions cards
Marker cones
Students write a fraction, with a certain denominator, on a post-it note. Alternatively, provide students with pre determined fraction cards. Eg. 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8.
Mark a playing area
The aim of this activity is to find a partner or group to make one whole using fraction cards.
Teacher gives each student a playing card.
Teacher calls out a locomotor skill for students to use to move around marked space.
When whistle is blown students must move to find a student/s with fraction cards that add to one whole.
Optional: Students record combinations in workbook.
Teacher collects playing cards and redistributes to play again, naming different locomotor skills each time.
1 card between 2 students
Use more than one denominator.
