Length: Use metres and kilometres for length and distances
Recognise the need for a formal unit longer than the metre for measuring distance
Estimate lengths and distances using an appropriate unit
Record distances using the abbreviation for kilometres (km)
Use a variety of measuring devices to measure lengths and distances in different contexts
Length: Convert between common metric units of length
Use decimal place value system to convert between metres and kilometres
Convert measurements to the same unit to compare lengths and distances
Outdoor playing area
Marker cones
1 ball per pair
Distribute one ball per pair.
Use 2 markers to establish a ‘gate’ that the ball has to pass through.
Players are equidistant from a marker.
A cooperative game in which a ball is kicked between two players. If the ball reaches the catcher on the full, both the catcher and the thrower step back. If it is dropped, both take a step forward. The winning pair is the one that has retreated the furthest. One or more pairs.
Each pair kicks the ball back and forth.
Each time the ball is caught, both players take a step back.
If the ball is dropped, play pauses and pairs use a measuring tool to measure the distance of their final kick (distance between both players).
Students record the distance in metres in their table and then convert the measurement into other units, eg. millimetres, centimetres, kilometres.
The winner is the pair who are the greatest distance from the gate markers when the stop signal is given or when the ball is dropped.
Convert to kilometres.
Order all of the throwing distances from smallest to longest.
Vary the type of throw.
Vary the ball.
