Model additive relations and compare quantities
Use concrete materials or fingers to model and solve addition and subtraction questions, counting forwards or backwards by ones as necessary
Identify part–whole relationships in numbers up to 10
Create, model and recognise combinations for numbers up to ten (Reasons about relations)
Count by ones to find the total or difference
Variety of targets labelled with numerals 0 - 10
Objects to throw
Whiteboard and markers
Mark a throwing line
Place targets labelled with numerals 0 - 10 at different distances and angles from throwing line. (Note - place targets where it is highly likely students will hit them)
Copy of chart shown in Figure 1 made for each pair of students
Form student pairs
Figure 1
The aim of this game is to successfully hit 2 targets that combine to make a total of 10. Students play in pairs. The player with the most combinations of 10 at the end of 6 rounds is the winner. Students should be encouraged to use their fingers to determine if the 2 numbers combine to be less than 10, 10 or more than 10.
Students take it in turns to successfully hit 2 targets.
Students may need to record the value of the targets hit.
Students use their fingers to determine if the 2 targets hit combine to be less than 10, 10, or more than 10.
After each round students record the number combinations under the correct heading in their chart.
Students have 6 turns each. The student with the most combinations that equal 10 is the winner.
Increase or decrease the distance between throwing line and targets.
Provide students with counters to calculate the total.
