Activity set-up
Students draw a table with the headings: number, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones
Ensure students are arm-width apart to move safely
Teacher states and displays a 4 digit number.
Students read the number and partition the number on whiteboards or in workbooks.
Students use physically active movements to show the value of each digit in the number:
Thousands - push ups
Hundreds - star jumps
Tens - squats
Ones - High knees
If the number was 1234, students would complete 1 push ups, 2 star jumps, 3 squats and 4 high knees.
Encourage students to partition the number in as many non-standard forms as possible, eg. 12 star jumps, 3 squats and 4 high knees.
Play using smaller or larger numbers
Play using decimal numbers.
Vary the physically active movements used
Partition the number before or after, 10 more than or 10 less than the stated number
