Use the counting sequence of ones flexibly
Count forwards to at least 30 and state the number after or before a given number, without needing to count from one
Count backwards from a given number 20 or less
A playing area big enough for students to bounce balls.
1 ball per student
Form small groups.
Players stand in a circle with interceptor in the middle.
The aim of this activty is to build student understanding of forward and backward counting sequences by reading numerals to at least 20. Students represent numbers as quantities through rhythm and movement.
Explain that students will be playing a counting game by slowly bouncing a ball for each number said aloud. Encourage all students to chorally count aloud and work on developing a steady rhythm.
Display a number card showing a number from 1 - 20. Allow time for students to read the numeral and say aloud. Commence counting and moving forwards to a given number to the rhythm of the balls bouncing.
Challenge students to begin by counting forwards until you call out ‘switch’. When they hear the word, students change direction and count backwards.
Repeat multiple times by displaying different numbers.
Change the way the ball travels. e.g. batting tapping, throwing the ball in the air.
