Home > Stage 2 > Representing numbers using place value > Chicken scramble
Whole numbers: Read, represent and order numbers to thousands
Group physical or virtual objects to show the structure of tens, hundreds and a thousand
Regroup numbers flexibly, recognising one thousand as 10 hundreds and one hundred as 10 tens or 100 ones
Whole numbers: Apply place value to partition and regroup numbers up to 4 digits
Record numbers using standard place value form
Partition numbers of up to 4 digits in non-standard forms
Indoor or outdoor playing area
Red, yellow, green and blue counters (to act as grain) or similar
Hoops (1 per 2 students)
Chalk
Student workbooks or white boards
Arrange hoops spaced 2 metres apart in a circle in a flat area.
Place a large collection of counters, ‘grain’, in the middle of a large, flat surface. (NB: It is important for student safety to spread these out to avoid students running into each other)
Inform students of the value of each coloured counters: Red - thousands, Yellow - hundreds, Green - tens, Blue - ones
Students move around a playing area collecting as many pieces of 'grain' as they can in the allocated time. Students partition the 'grain' and calculate the total.
In pairs students collect as many pieces of ‘grain’ (counters) as they can in 4 minutes, returning their collection to their ‘nest’ (hoop).
Students partition the pieces of ‘grain’ they have collected.
Students calculate the total represented by their grain.
Students share the strategy they used to calculate the total.
During the activity, ask students ‘let’s talk and think like mathematicians’ questions.
Discuss why it is useful to be able to partition numbers.
Students record the amount in their book.
Play game again to consolidate efficient strategies.
Use additional counter colours to make larger numbers, use fewer colours to make smaller numbers.
Vary the locomotor movement.
Change the timeframe.
Change the size of the playing area.
