Select strategies flexibly to solve addition and subtraction problems of up to 3 digits
Indoor or outdoor playing area
Whiteboard and marker
Mathematics book
Draw a game board so each student has the same one:
_ _ _ + _ _ _ + _ _ _ = ____
Players spin a spinner and decide where to place the digit within a number sentence to reach 1000.
Students find a partner and a 0-9 dice or spinner.
Draw a game board so each student has the same one: _ _ _ + _ _ _ + _ _ _ = ____
Each player takes a turn to spin the spinner and performs a physical movement the number of times shown on the spinner, eg. Spinner lands on 9, player performs 9 reps of the chosen movement, eg. squats / star jumps / push ups, etc.
Players then decide where to place that digit in their number sentence (equation).
Students spin the spinner 9 times each.
The person whose sum is closest to 1000 is the winner!
Share thinking with a partner and record in mathematics journal or workbook where appropriate.
Change the number sentence to use add 2-digit numbers, 4-digit numbers
Work backwards from 1000 using subtraction to get to 0.
Change the target number.
Vary the locomotor movement.
Work with money values.
