Length: Use metres and kilometres for length and distances
Recognise the need for a formal unit longer than the metre for measuring distance
Estimate lengths and distances using an appropriate unit
Record distances using the abbreviation for kilometres (km)
Use a variety of measuring devices to measure lengths and distances in different contexts
Length: Convert between common metric units of length
Use decimal place value system to convert between metres and kilometres
Convert measurements to the same unit to compare lengths and distances
Outdoor playing area
Marker cones
Discus (or similar)
Mark a throwing line
Players throw their discus (or similar) as far as they can from a throwing line. Players estimate the length of their throw and use a tape measure to measure and record their longest throw.
Players throw their discus (or similar) as far as they can.
Players stand side on, feet shoulder width apart and use the non-throwing hand to aim. Hold discus with four fingers spread apart and thumb resting on top.
Players should bend back leg, turn backwards at hips so discus is well behind body, unwind lower body and then upper body, discus arms follows last and then discus is released.
Each player has a set number of throws, e.g. 3.
Players choose their longest throw to estimate, measure and record in metres, centimetres and kilometres.
Play for 3 rounds.
Players arrange their 3 throws from smallest to largest.
Vary the throwing objects used.
Record in different units.
Change the event, eg. long jump, shot put.
