Apply efficient mental and written strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
Apply known strategies such as levelling, addition for subtraction, using constant difference, and bridging (Reasons about relations)
Use place value to add or subtract 3 or more numbers with different numbers of digits
Identify efficient and inefficient multidigit subtraction strategies.
Indoor or outdoor playing area
Tennis ball (or similar)
Whiteboard and marker
Mathematics book
Players form pairs.
Find a space to play.
In pairs, students race to reach the target number by adding 1, 2, 3 or 4.
Start with the 'Got It' target 23.
The first player chooses a whole number from 1 to 4.
They throw and catch the ball, clapping their hands the number of times of their chosen number, eg.:
1 = throw ball in air and clap once before catching.
2 = throw ball in air and clap twice before catching.
3 = throw ball in air and clap three times before catching.
4 = throw ball in air and clap four times before catching.
Players take turns to add a whole number from 1 to 4 to the running total. Record on a whiteboard.
The player who hits the target of 23 wins the game.
Choose a new 'Got It' target, eg. 10 to make easier.
Choose a new range of numbers to add on.
Use less number to choose from, eg. 1 and 2.
Change the physical exercise.
