Activity set-up
Students draw a table with the 4 headings:
Number
Hundreds
Tens
Ones
Ensure students are arm-width apart to move safely
Teacher states and displays a 3 digit number.
Students read the number and partition the number on whiteboards or in workbooks.
Students use physically active movements to show the value of each digit in the number:
Hundreds - star jumps
Tens - squats
Ones - High knees
If the number was 485, students would complete 4 star jumps, 8 squats and 5 high knees.
Play using 2 or 4 digit numbers
Vary the physically active movements used
Partition the number before or after, 10 more than or 10 less than the stated number
