Fairy tales come to life at the AHS Princess Prom. Aurora High School gets completely decked out in decorations, balloons, and lights once a year, every year. The Princess Prom is a father-daughter dance for kids in grades K-5. The PTO and National Honors Society collaborate to create a night that girls and their fathers will never forget.
Princess Prom 2025 was held on Saturday, February 1st. The cafeteria, hallways, and both the auxiliary gym and the varsity gyms were decorated from top to bottom. This year’s theme was evident, the green and pink decorations were from the 2024 film, ‘Wicked.’ The theme was well selected, as it resonated well with the kids and went with the overall fairytale look. Numerous activities were set up throughout the school. Craft stations were being run by PTO volunteers and NHS students. At these stations, attendees could decorate bags, color, and make other fun crafts. The kareoke station was buzzling with life as the girls and princesses belted out their favorite fairytale songs. Face painting and hair tinsel stations added to the magic. NHS volunteer Rania Rafiq is happy to have been able to help out at the event, “it was worth it seeing all of the kids have fun and seeing the dads spend time with their daughters in a fun way.” Different photo spots, from backdrops to inflatables, were available all around the dance area. Food like cookies, pizza, water, and other treats were laid out for attendees to enjoy. Close to thirty high school students were dressed as fairytale characters and were walking around the school taking pictures with the girls, dancing, and helping out wherever needed.
It was the team work between the PTO and NHS that truly made this event come to life. NHS’s role was to provide volunteers for setup and tear down, as well as volunteers to dress up as the fairytale characters. Setup started as early as 5 pm the day prior and resumed from 8 am to 2 pm on the Saturday of the dance. Nearly fourty NHS volunteers were involved in the set up process. Further more, NHS provided almost thirty volunteers to play the characters. NHS officer Manisha Girn was in charge of communication between NHS and the PTO, “I acted as a liaison between the Elementary PTO and our NHS members.” The event went smoothly and was a success. The Princess Prom saw another successful year thanks to Aurora students and parents.
As they prepare for next year’s Princess Prom, the NHS staff reflects on what they’d do differently and on what’d they’d keep the same. Members of the staff agree that other than hoping for more volunteers next year, not much needs to be changed. NHS advisor Mrs. Anne Walker’s advice to next year’s NHS Princess Prom volunteers is to: “Enjoy the event! If you come with a positive attitude and are excited to help, then you (and all the princesses) will have a wonderful evening!”
The Princess Prom is an Aurora tradition that holds a special place in the hearts of girls and their fathers. Thanks to the great collaboration between NHS and the PTO, Princess Prom is sure to continue to see success for years to come.
