Mrs. Watt is an important and extremely valued member of Aurora High School. Mrs. Watt is a Grade-A Teacher that AHS certainly could not live without. Her positivity radiates throughout the school and her undoubting encouragement is treasured by each and every student.
Mrs. Watt has been a teacher for a total of eight years, and her passion for teaching starts here: “When I was in college I went to Kolkata, India where I worked for a month with special needs adolescents teaching the blind and deaf with developmental delays. I formed amazing bonds with the women there and it was the first time I felt like I was doing something for more than myself. To feel a part of something bigger and to develop amazing relationships with students despite a language barrier, was an experience I am eternally grateful for. The moment I got back I met with my academic advisor to add an education major to my environmental science degree.”
Mrs. Watt continues to describe her educational journey: “I went to Saint Vincent College where I studied and got a degree in Environmental Science and Education. I also went back a few years ago and got my master's in curriculum and instruction. In March, I plan on continuing my education with a master's in educational leadership.”
Mrs. Watt has multiple interest areas and topics she liked in high school and still enjoys; she also takes her inspiration from another Grade-A Teacher. “My favorite subject was no surprise, environmental science, anatomy, and English as well. I had an amazing teacher, Mrs. Fogel, whose kindness and strength stuck with me throughout my entire life. She is someone I try my best to emulate,” Mrs. Watt stated.
Mrs. Watt’s high school experience has had its ups and downs, but through it all it has allowed her to adapt and become who she is today. “My high school experience was fun, tough, silly, sad, happy! I was no different than our students here. High school is a time of change and discovery and with that come a multitude of good times and emotions. I recognize now that a lot of the tough times helped me grow, the good times helped me appreciate life, and I still think back fondly on all the lessons I learned,” Mrs. Watt noted.
Eventually, along the way, Mrs. Watt ended up teaching at Aurora High School where she helps students thrive and reach their full potential. Out of all the many aspects of Aurora, Mrs. Watt has one element that stands out to her: “I think my favorite part of Aurora is the pride! I love the energy that the students bring to everything! They have such vivacious energy in class, on the field, on the stage, and really everywhere! The teachers and parents are no different! I was so enamored by it that I went out and bought pants and shoes in Greenmen colors and continue to make an effort to wear them any chance I can!”
Mrs. Watt has a passion for her students and a dedication to teaching, which is evident when hearing about one of her favorite parts of her Environmental Science class. “My favorite memory at Aurora was our infectious disease lab. I won’t let too much spoil the surprise this year, but I love modeling the spread of disease in class and I love the reactions from the students this day. I feel like my cheeks are sore when I get home from smiling and laughing so much,” Mrs. Watt exclaimed.
Every teacher has their preferences with teaching, whether that be grade level, concepts, or units. Mrs. Watt explained, “Anytime I am with my students I am happy. Each day and grade level comes with surprises, but I suppose juniors and seniors are my favorites because I get to teach content that I have a degree in and am immensely passionate about. My favorite unit to teach is human populations because it looks at science, sociology, politics, legislation, and ethics. I also enjoy our air pollution unit because I find the Chemistry side of things enthralling!”
Of all the many important individuals in Mrs. Watt’s life, a few people stand out to her above the others: “There were many people that made an impact on me. My dad was a huge influence on my ability to public speak and get a message across. My mom provided me with the understanding that a gentle hand and approach to life is sometimes best. My husband is a perfect model of living your life for love. And my children change my world, my priorities, and my purpose. I see life so clearly for the gift that it is thanks to these key and influential people.”
Along with all of her other studies, Mrs. Watt has studied an art that most people may not know. “I am a pretty open book, but some students might not know that I hold a highly ranked black belt in martial arts. I studied Tang Soo Doo for many years and competitively did so. It was some of the hardest competitions in my life and so I am proud of the medals, trophies, and also the confidence I earned by studying that,” Mrs. Watt explained.
Mrs. Watt spends almost all of her free time with her family. She stated, “I love to find fun things to do with my two beautiful children, Wesley and Ollie! We love going to the library, visiting nature centers, going on hikes, and sled riding!”
Mrs. Watt is not only invested in her students' education, but she is also always available to support her students or her athletes; she is exactly the kind of teacher that students can confide in. Mrs. Watt has many outstanding teaching qualities, however, one takes the cake: “I hope students would say relationship building. My love for teaching really comes from knowing my students and what makes them happy. I love to talk and hear about your day, whether that is good or bad. My students bring so much joy to my day and I hope the reverse is true.”
Mrs. Watt is a dedicated and inspiring teacher at Aurora High School. Her excitement, joy, and passion for teaching make learning enjoyable for all of her students. Mrs. Watt is always willing to help her students to achieve greatness in or out of the classroom. Her creativity, compassion, empathy, and encouragement are only some of the qualities that truly make Mrs. Watt a Grade-A Teacher.
