The puzzle block game ‘Block Blast’ has the world addicted, with over 40 million downloads in the United States alone. The game came out in 2022 but achieved rapid popularity in 2024. It caught the attention of social media users online and the game found itself installed on hundreds of millions of users’ phones worldwide. The game holds a near five-star rating on both the App Store and Google Play Store.
When opening the app, two options are available: Adventure mode and Classic mode. Adventure mode has 96 levels, each with a different puzzle. Every puzzle has a different target score that one must meet before moving on to the next level. Classic mode allows for the game to be played freely without a pre-set puzzle or target score. Both game modes follow the overall standard concept. Players are given three different formations of blocks to place on an 8x8 grid. Three new blocks appear after the first three are used. Points are earned whenever a block is placed. When an entire row or column on the grid is filled, it disappears, which also earns points. The goal is to get the highest possible score. The game ends when the board gets too full to place any new block.

The game was brought to my attention when my close friends posted about it on their private social media stories. They expressed their addiction to the game and boasted about their high scores. AHS senior Brooke Zeid stated, “My high score is 75,000.” Her score is way above the average block blast score.
I knew I had to try the game out for myself. It pains me to admit that ‘Block Blast’ is extremely addictive. The game is so simple that it can be played from anywhere. It keeps you engaged and entertained. Everyone playing it recently has only fuelled the addiction as it creates a sense of competition. The game runs very smoothly and has yet to glitch for me. Unfortunately, I have nothing negative to say about ‘Block Blast.’ I was trying to avoid getting hooked on it, but it is truly an enjoyable game that will leave you wanting to keep playing. I rate it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It loses .5 stars for simply being too addictive.

‘Block Blast’ is played globally, including here at Aurora High School. Students play at lunch, in between classes, and after school. Various students share my views about the game being fun, but far too addictive. AHS student Cienna Babb expressed her enjoyment of the game and reported that she spends “about an hour and a half on block blast a day.” Students have also shared how the game helps them mentally. Senior Iris Smith stated, “It is a great game and it’s a good distraction from stress and anxiety.” AHS students appreciate the game and everything it has to offer. When asked if she would recommend this game, student Olivia Frissore said, “YES. especially if you like puzzle-like games.” These students at Aurora High School seem to have a positive view of ‘Block Blast.’
Mobile App game trends come and go, and ‘Block Blast’ has made an impact during its time in the spotlight. Users seem content with the game’s simplicity and addictiveness. If you are okay with taking the risk of getting addicted, then you should give ‘Block Blast’ a try.
