Ms. Hilston is an English teacher at AHS. She’s been teaching for 29 years, and she teaches both AP Lang and CP English 11.
Hilston explains that she wanted to become a teacher because she wanted to help people become their best selves: “[I wanted to become a teacher because] I wanted to help others succeed.” She also adds that her favorite part of teaching is the students!
Hilston shared that she earned a B.A. at the Ohio State University, and got her Master of Education degree at Kent State University.
Funny enough, her favorite memory of teaching at AHS has to do with OSU: “[My favorite memory of teaching at AHS was] The year that Jim Tressel, head coach for The Ohio State University Buckeyes, actively recruited Adam Bellamy. Coach Tressel visited AHS a few times, and we all got to meet him!”
Hilston explained that juniors were her favorite grade to teach: “ I love teaching juniors because they are serious about learning and preparing for college.” She also shared that her favorite subject in school was English hence why she makes such an amazing English teacher!
One thing that students might not know about Ms. Hilston is that she’s actually more of an introvert rather than an extrovert: “I am an introvert at heart.” She also shares what she enjoys doing outside of school: “I enjoy reading and going to the gym.”
Hilston feels that her best teaching quality is her ability to make her classroom comfortable for her students: “I like to think that it's my ability to create a warm, fun, engaging classroom environment.”
Hilston has been a part of AHS for many years, and hopefully for many more to come! She makes an excellent teacher and has continued to show that she is there for her students, as she just wants the best for them.
