The Wallows released their third studio album in May of 2024. The album was titled “Model” and features 12 songs. Many know this band by their hit song back in 2019 titled “Are You Bored Yet?” which featured Clario. After the release of their song, they stayed as a relatively small band but are recently gaining more popularity for their newest single released back in April, titled “Calling After Me.” Back in 2021, they were nominated for their first iHeart Radio award for best new rock/ alternative rock artist.
I’ve listened to their other two albums, “Nothing Happens” and "Tell Me It’s Over”. But, I would say that “Model" is my favorite because of the variety of songs throughout the album. I don’t love “Nothing Happens” because all the songs sound too similar. Even though I enjoy “Sidelines”, “Remember When", and their hit song “Are You Bored Yet?” The other songs in the album don’t stick out to me. The same thing goes for “Tell Me It’s Over;” the songs just feel too repetitive.

The band consists of three members: Dylan Minnette, the rhythm guitarist; Braeden Lemasters, the bass guitarist and songwriter; and Cole Preston, the drummer. Dylan and Braeden are both vocalists and sing different songs throughout the album. The band was formed through a music program where Dylan and Braeden met Cole back in 2009. Dylan and Braeden were childhood actors who knew each other because of their mothers.

Songs such as “Going Under” and “Anytime, Always" are more upbeat songs while "I Wouldn't Mind" is much slower and calmer. “I Wouldn’t Mind” is a perfect song if you're struggling but are working your way up. The song is good but I don’t like how it's such a short song at only 2:10 minutes. “Anytime, Always” is a very short song, even though I’m a fan of the song, I don’t like that it has such a big build up for the end just to be clapping. For “Going Under” the vocalist puts so much emotion at the end of “Going Under” which left me shocked because of how good it was. The theme of the song is about feeling insecure in a relationship, which many people can relate to.

Out of the twelve songs on the album, there are three that really stuck out to me. Those three songs include “A Warning”, “Calling After Me”, and “Going Under” are relatively upbeat songs with good melodies and an even better bridge.

Track 3 titled “Calling After Me” is their most popular song on the album. It was released as a single on March 21, 2023 and quickly gained popularity on social media platforms such as TikToks. Dylan Minnette is the lead singer for this song. The song is about wanting someone's attention even though everyone else wants them. In my opinion, it’s a really good song and it’s definitely the catchiest on the album.

Track 1 titled “Your Apartment” is the first song off the album that they released on February 16, 2024. The song is about an ex and their memories together and how he wonders if there is someone new that will replace their old memories together. I think this song is okay. It’s good but it wouldn’t be the first song that I would put on the album. While listening, I noticed that there was a lot of building up to a beat change, and I expected for the song to get more up beat, but in my opinion it kind of stayed the same which disappointed me.

The question that remains is if “Model” is really worth listening to? The answer is yes. The songs and the instrumental aspects of “Model” are much improved than their other two albums. You can tell that they put a lot of time and effort into making this album and I’m glad that the Wallows are getting the recognition they deserve.
