Ruby Sorma, a freshman at AHS, is an incredibly dedicated and talented student. Her high school experience has already started off strong and she is definitely enjoying it so far. Ruby says, “High school has been going very well for me. I've met a lot of new people and I really like all of my teachers.”
She is already taking some challenging courses like Honors Biology, Honors Integrated Math II, and Honors English. With Ruby taking honors classes, she will definitely be prepared for any other honors or AP classes in the future. She states, “Honors Biology is my favorite class by far. I love my teacher, Mrs. Biro, and a few of my good friends are in my class. I really like bio because I get to learn about all sorts of things, like humans, animals, plants, and how they work.”
Ruby is also involved in clubs like Student Council, Interact Club, and Drug-free Club. She was also previously in Beta club for 2 years in middle school. “I love being able to meet new people and be in clubs with people of all different grades,” she states.
Not only is Ruby an avid learner who is involved in clubs but she is also involved in sports. She says, “I've played softball for almost 12 years now, and I’m a pitcher and shortstop. I used to play volleyball and used to dance too. I played volleyball for 5 years and danced for 11 years. Softball has always been my favorite sport and I hope to play in college at Florida State. My travel team is the Akron Racers 16U and I absolutely love all my teammates and coaches.”
Ruby is very excited to play softball all throughout high school. “The experience I'm most excited about is getting to play softball with my sister and my friends. I've made so many new friendships with the girls that I will eventually be playing with, and I'm very grateful,” she says.
Balancing school, clubs, and sports is very challenging for most students, especially when they are still adjusting from middle school to high school. Keeping up with work can be especially difficult in the first semester, but Ruby is definitely succeeding. She states, “So far, balancing my school life and social life hasn't been too difficult for me. I always try to find time between sports, school, and friends to read, rest, and do homework. After school, I either have lifting, pitching lessons, team practice, or open gyms. I try my best to finish my homework in my A-time or study hall so I don't have to worry about it later.”
Having good organizational skills as a student will definitely help Ruby later on in high school and throughout her life. While studies and extracurriculars are important, having a good balance between those and a student's social life is also important.
While Ruby loves biology, softball, and spending time with her friends and family, she is also very passionate about reading. “A fun fact about me is that I love to read. When I'm not at school, sports, or with friends, I find time to read and relax. I try to read at least 20 books each year. Last year, I read 23 books. My favorite genres are mystery, fantasy, and romance. My love for reading first started in 7th grade.” Clearly, with 23 books in one year, Ruby is an incredibly avid reader.
Everyone needs encouragement, and AHS is an amazing school where any student can get the support they need to have a good balance of schoolwork, sports, clubs, and social life. Ruby states, “A way that Aurora has positively impacted me is through my studies. I'm encouraged by my teachers every day to work hard and get good grades. With this encouragement, my grades have always been where I want them, and I'm thankful that they pushed me to get there.”
Ruby also has support from others outside of AHS. A good support system is needed to accomplish goals and succeed, and Ruby has a great one. “Some people I look up to are my sister and my mom. They are very hard workers and always encourage me to try harder too. I look up to my sister for things like sports, since she is a great athlete. She is always at lifting, practices, and open gyms, which encourages me to be present as well. I look up to my mom for things outside of school and sports. I'm very grateful for the support they've given me, and I admire their resilience.”
All of these qualities that Ruby has are things that students at AHS should strive to have. The fact she is already demonstrating these traits as a freshman is truly amazing, and shows that Ruby will definitely have a successful future.
