Ava Worman is a junior at Aurora High School. She is a member of multiple clubs and the AHS Highlights team.
Ava has been dancing for as long as she can remember. “I have been dancing pretty much my whole life because once I started, I never wanted to stop,” she explained. Because of her passion for dance, she decided she wanted to try out for Highlights when she was going into her sophomore year of high school. She mentions, “ I started highlights because I wanted to expand my dance training to more different styles that I am not used to.”
Dance is a sport in which you are around your friends all of the time, “I dance a total of 12 hours a week, but 22 hours including Highlights.” For Ava, she has made long-lasting friendships from the sport. “I have made some of my closest friends through dance and I am so grateful that I get to be part of such amazing teams,” she shared. She also gets the chance to make memories that will last forever.
Ava hopes to continue dancing in the future and does not want it to end here, whether that includes dancing herself or making the choreography for it. She noted, “I definitely see dance in my future even though I don't know exactly what that entails but I would love to be a professional choreographer when I am older.” Dancing itself is difficult let alone creating the choreography for it; her passion is admirable.
One of the people who has had a big influence on Ava is her dance teacher. “Someone I look up to is my dance teacher because she is an amazing ballerina and has made a career out of dance, which is something that I would love to do in the future.” Like all young adults, it’s important to have role models to look up to, and one day Ava may be the role model for another young dancer.
Balancing academics and dance can be hard, especially during the fall season when there are football games. Although it can be stressful sometimes, Ava has learned how to balance the two. She states, “It is very hard in the fall when Highlights and dance overlap, but I try my hardest to utilize my study halls and keep track of my homework ahead of time so that I can devote my after-school time to dance and also be able to have time to myself.”
Although it seems like Ava spends all her time in the dance studio, she is part of multiple clubs at AHS. “I am in Interact Club and Z Club which are great clubs that help me be more a part of my community through volunteering.” She has also attended meetings for clubs like S.T.A.R.S, a club that allows students to show their views on certain political or social issues and topics through after-school debates.
When asked what she likes doing in her free time, she stated “I love hanging out with friends and shopping.” She also enjoys watching reality TV shows whenever she has time to herself, “I like watching reality TV shows like Love is Blind, true crime shows and my favorite show, Dancing with the Stars.”
Dance is one of the most important things in Ava’s life. She has been doing it forever and has so many reasons for why she loves it “I love watching dance and performing it because of the feeling and emotion it gives you and how you can feel so inspired by the movement,” she shared. She even notes how the support from the dance community is important to her. “I also love the community that dance has given me and how I have made some of my closest friends through dance. I have found some of my biggest inspirations and have built a better work ethic through the sport,” she reflected.
Ava’s balance is not only commendable on the stage but also in life; her goals and her skills are admirable.
