Hala Bamashmos is a junior in high school, an active participant in various sports and extracurriculars, and above all a friend to many through her contagious smile and affectionate character.
As a junior in high school, Hala has had her fair share of experiences, mostly being positive as she states, “So far, it's been an amazing experience, it was definitely hard at first because I'm new and I thought it was going to be tough but everyone was so welcoming and that includes teachers and students so I'm really glad to be a part of this school.” Being a new student at a new school can be very challenging, but Hala preserved and was embraced with open arms.
Hala is taking some problematic classes; however, that does not stop her from enjoying and excelling in them. When asked about her favorite class Bamashmos exclaims, “ My favorite class is definitely AP Government with Mr. Rubin, I really enjoy learning about new countries and how their governments function. Learning about the US government has been a great experience and one of my favorite parts of the class was the big mock presidential debate during the beginning of the year.” Taking AP courses can be stressful, but Bamashmos finds them worthwhile as she gets to learn and further educate herself on topics she is interested in.
With this in mind, Bamashmos considers herself a good student because of her academic skills. She elaborates, “I try my best to stay on top of my work, ask questions when I need help, and stay organized. I’m also pretty good at managing my time and staying focused when I need to.” Hala uses these strategies to excel in her schoolwork and strengthen her overall learning.
Hala is a hard worker not only in her education but also in her extracurriculars. Hala participates in a couple of clubs, sharing, “I’m in Interact Club, where we do volunteer work, and Stars Club, which is all about debating and sharing ideas.” Hala’s involvement in Aurora High School only proves her commitment to being a dedicated student.
Outside of school, Bamashmos participates in club soccer. She states, “I really enjoy it! It keeps me active and I love being part of a team.” Hala surely keeps busy with her school work, clubs, and sports, yet handles it effortlessly.
Bamashmos is also a part of the (still fairly new) AHS girls' Lacrosse team. Hala joined the team this year expressing her thought process: “Joining the team was scary at first but the team is super welcoming. Everyone is so nice and supportive we honestly feel like a little family. I never feel left out and it’s just a great group to be around. I definitely made a lot of great new friends.” Hala has nothing but great things to say about this team, counteracting all the worries she once had.
Bamashmos reflects on her cherished lacrosse season memories revealing, “My favorite memory is after our very first scrimmage. Even though we lost, we were on the bus ride home singing and laughing. We kept such a good attitude, and it was a really fun and positive moment for all of us.” Hala proves that winning and losing isn’t everything, but building lifelong connections with teammates and having an optimistic attitude is.
A fun fact many might not know about Hala is that she can speak three languages! She announces, “[I speak] Turkish, Arabic, and English! I’ve also lived in five different countries, which I think is pretty cool. As proven, Bamashmos is linguistically diverse and culturally enriched, which is something many others can’t say.
To further prove my point on Hala’s outstanding character, Bamashmos describes herself in three words: “Understanding because I always try to listen and care about how others feel. Patient, I don’t get frustrated easily and I take my time with things. Kind, because I try to be nice to everyone, no matter what.” Hala embodies what is it to be a Greenman: Compassionate, generous, collaborative, hardworking, and involved.
As Bamashmos enters her senior year of high school she shares her future goals and aspirations: “I want to go to flight school in North Dakota. I’m really excited about it. I want to become a commercial pilot because I love planes, and I think flying for a living would be amazing. I've also been flying around the world my whole life so it's a passion of mine.” Hala’s dreams are big and I have no doubt that she will soar high to achieve them.
In short, Hala is an extraordinary person. She has a multitude of qualities that make her shine in her daily hobbies and school work. She will only continue to flourish outside of high school and fly to new destinations where she’ll make her mark on the world.
