This year, AHS is putting on “The Addams Family” as its spring musical. The cast has been working meticulously to ensure the show runs smoothly, while the crew has been busy behind the scenes building and painting the set.
Senior, Aiden Kondik, who plays Gomez, mentions that the rehearsals have been fun: "I’ve really enjoyed rehearsals so far. Despite having to spend an extra 3 or 4 hours after school, working with this incredibly fun and talented cast makes up for it.”
Freshman, Aubrey Burdett, says she has loved playing Pugsley: “Absolutely! Rehearsals have been such a blast. Playing Pugsley is so much fun, and the whole cast is just amazing. Every rehearsal brings new energy, and I love all the chaotic, hilarious, and random moments we have together. It seriously makes me smile every time.”
Director, Mr. Albrecht, mentions there is a lot of laughter involved with rehearsals: “I always enjoy the rehearsal process. We do a lot of laughing but we also work hard to find the characters.”
Senior, Maddie Yankowski, who plays Morticia, says she has been having a lot of fun during rehearsals: “Yes! This group is so much fun to be around and everyone is working so hard. We are all having a lot of fun with this show and it feels good to be at rehearsals at Aurora again.”
As the stage manager, I have been at every rehearsal, and they have been very fun to watch. I have been watching the show progress, which I love. The show has been coming together so well and I can’t wait for audiences to see it.
Kondik believes the audience should expect a funny show: “The audiences should [expect] a very funny show about love and family with a signature dark Addams family spin.”
Burdett says the audience should be expecting a dark and funny show: “A weird, spooky, and ridiculously fun show! The Addams Family is packed with comedy, fantastic music, and some surprisingly sweet moments. The characters are all so bizarre in the best way, and I think the audience is going to love how much personality and heart this show has.”
Mr. Albrecht says the audience should be expecting to have a good time: “The audience should be expecting a good time. They should also be ready to see twenty kids who have worked hard to put on a great show.”
Junior, Zach Best, who plays Lucas, believes the show can pull at your heartstrings: “The audience should expect an energetic and funny show that is still able to pull on their heartstrings at times.”
Senior, Griffin Welsh, who plays Fester, says people should be expecting a show with light within the darkness: “Although at first the setting may make it seem like a dark and gloomy show, it is actually very light and fun. There are a lot of funny jokes and sweet songs interspersed throughout.”
Even though the topic of the show is “The Addams Family,” the show is filled with a lot of heart within the darkness.
Junior, Rachel Marzullo, who plays Grandma, mentions the thing she has liked the most about the show is the energy: “The thing I like most about this show is just the overall energy. This show is so high energy and is hilarious. I love playing the comedic role and getting laughs out of the crowd. I am so excited to get an audience for this show!”
Junior, Chloe Sutter, who plays Wednesday, says she likes the differences between the Addams family and the Beinekes: “The thing I like most about the show is the polarity of the Addams and the Beinekes.”
Yankowski explains that she has liked playing Morticia: “What I like the most is playing Morticia. She is such a fun character to play with and the whole idea of her is such a fun part of the story.”
Best mentions he has loved the songs: “My favorite part about the show is the songs, I'm having a lot of fun learning and performing some really beautiful music for this performance. Though it's my first time participating in a musical I feel really at home with all the other cast members and friends.
Burdett says she has loved singing her songs and working with the cast: “Pugsley is just so much fun to play! He’s mischievous and a little unhinged, but at the same time, he loves his family. His big moment in "What If" is pure chaos in the best way, and I love getting to bring out his more sensitive side, too. Also, this cast is incredible—every scene is intriguing because everyone brings so much energy and talent.”
This show is the last high school musical for many of the actors. They have shared what the show means to them.
Kondik believes the seniors this year have gotten so close over the years: ”This show means so much to me. Over the past four years, the theater seniors have really gotten closer, so being able to spend our last hurrah so close together is really special.”
Yankowski says this show is part of the reason she is continuing theater in college: “This show means a lot to me since I started theater at Aurora in 6th grade. It was Once On This Island Jr. and I was a storyteller. Ever since then, I have loved doing theater and I am going to continue to do musical theater in college.”
Welsh mentions the show will make it hard to say goodbye: “This will be the last of the many plays and musicals I have performed in at Aurora before I graduate. It will be sad for me to say goodbye to the many friends and memories I have made on the stage.”
As the stage manager and a senior, this show has meant the world to me. I have loved being at rehearsals and seeing the show progress every day. I know that this is going to be something that will be hard to say goodbye to, but I know that theater will be with me as I am going into theater in college!
The show is running April 11th through April 13th. Tickets can be bought here.
