WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

I am super happy to report that the class was BEGGING for us to start reading another novel! They really seemed to enjoy When You Reach Me and wanted to begin another. As a language arts teacher, this brought so much joy to my heart! I hope that eventually, reading can become a hobby for many of them and not something they only do for homework. This time will be slightly different. They have voted and chosen 4 different books, so we will have 4 groups, reading different books. They will still have job sheets  and reading to complete for the week, meaning we will stop having vocabulary quizzes again. I will not be giving out their reading assignments until about mid-week and no reading is due at the end of this week.

Also this week, we will begin wrapping up our learning about Muhammad Ali by starting the beginning steps of a multi-media art project that will mainly be completed with Mrs. Smith. Students will be choosing their favorite Ali quote (there are so many), creating word clouds of words that describe or represent him, and creating a list of symbols that signify important moments in his life or decisions he made. We will use all the reading passages, timelines, and videos we have used thus far to do all of this. I look forward to seeing their own unique visual representation of Ali when they are complete.

**Heads up: I have filled out the form to take the class on a field trip to the Muhammad Ali Center, just waiting to hear back from them to schedule!

Morphology:  No new concepts this week, just more practice with the 4 new Greek morphemes we learned last week!

Homework: No homework due this week- IXL skill plans are always encouraged and students have incentives to work toward to completing goals.

Math: Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class we are starting our next chapter- Multiplying Fractions. Students will start out learning how to represent multiplication of a whole number and a fraction with visual models. Students will use pattern blocks to model real-world scenarios and then determine the value of all their pattern blocks. Students are focusing on which number represents the number of groups and which amount represents the group size, even when one of the factors is a fraction. Students will also think about how multiplying by a proper fraction results in a smaller product.

Homework:

3/19- SS #102

3/20- SS #103

3/21- SS #104
