Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

Our comprehension skill of the week will continue to be finding main idea based on the key details in the text. We will learn strategies for finding the main idea of a story and how to use details to support our claim. This week we will apply this skill to non-fiction texts. It is important students know the main idea is about one sentence that tells what the text is mostly about and not a retelling of every detail. I look forward to students reading non-fiction texts on interesting topics.  This can be tricky for good readers to do initially, so this will be a skill we work on all year long. This is also a great skill that transfers really well into writing explanatory pieces.

In class, we are now doing morphology every day of the week and building a card set of prefixes, suffixes, Greek bases and Latin bases. We have started something called the "3 part drill" that we do 3 times a week. It involves auditory, visual and kinesthetic ways to review and learn morphemes. This week, we will add the -ed suffix and this will be assessed on the vocabulary quiz.

Homework: Study for Vocabulary quiz on Friday!

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week in math class, students will learn that area is an attribute of 2-dimensional figures and talk about scenarios in which finding the area of a figure is needed. Using 1 inch square tiles, students will tile different sized figures creating rows/columns. Then students will use repeated addition or multiplication to find the area of a rectangle. Students will also learn the importance of a square unit since we are measuring with a non-linear unit. We will look a different square units like a square inch, square foot, square yard and compare these units.
