Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

This week we will review last weeks section of Because of Winn Dixie. We will work on how to pull out important events from a text for a summary. After grading last weeks literature circle job sheets, I have decided to raise the expectation in hopes to see a bit more effort from many. Points will now be counted for capitalization, punctuation, understanding, and spelling (we call this CUPS).  Spelling will only count for character names and word wizard vocabulary words, as they should be copied from the book.

In class, outside of working on our novel, we will start focusing on what makes complete sentences and parts of speech! We will learn how to identify the subject and predicate of sentences and label the parts of speech within the sentence. This will also translate into "dressing up" our sentences in our own writing to make them more detailed and interesting!

Morphology:  We will have a morphology quiz on Friday, February 23rd. Students should use their morphology cards on the ring (created in class and typically kept at school) and their morpheme chart in their notebook to study. I will name the morpheme, give an example word, and students will choose the meaning from multiple choice questions on a google form.

Homework: Read p. 128-155 of Because of Winn Dixie and complete job sheet for literature circle meetings on FRIDAY!

**Study for Morphology Quiz, also on Friday

**Cursive handwriting workbook should be complete to page 50 (for a grade) by the end of the trimester. Students have known this more about a month now and they work on this during morning work multiple days a week.

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class we are starting our next module- Understand Fractions as Numbers. Students will use visual models of whole shapes partitioned into equal-sized parts to identify and represent halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths. Students will also show and describe how fractions name parts of a whole or group.

When gathering research, the students will create a Google Slide and eventually present those during class. Also, the students will write an autobiography for their presidents using the information that they gathered. Similar to Christmas Around the World, the students will be dressing up as their presidents and sharing their story with students and parents.

We will continue our Saints Madness project this week. Students have chosen a saint to research. The students are working individually or in pairs. Our goal for this week is to research about our saint. This will help the students to determine which population their nonprofit will be serving in honor of. This project will take several weeks and a tentative timeline is below.
