WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps
This is a very short week in Language Arts for 5th grade. Due to Fall Field Day on Monday and early dismissal Thursday, we will only have class Tuesday and Wednesday. We will continue to focus on strategies for pulling key details from non-fiction texts that support the main idea. This can be a tough skill to master, as it's hard to differentiate between supporting details and those that are not as essential to the main idea.
In Morphology, we will not learn a new concept but we will be adding a few more prefixes and suffixes to our review card stack. The more morphemes we add, the further we can dive into morphology and the more word sums we will be able to create. See the image to the left for an example of what that looks like!
Enjoy your Fall Break!!!
Homework: NO VOCABULARY QUIZ
Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week in Math class we are working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers with like denominators. Students will discover that when subtracting fractions, there are times you have to regroup in order to subtract. We will start by subtracting a fraction from a whole number like 6 - 1/4. Students will rename the fraction as 5 4/4 so they are able to take away a fourth. We will progress to more complex problems as needed. Several students will use fractions with unlike denominators for added rigor.
Homework:
10/9- SS #29
10/10- SS #30
10/11- SS #31
10/12- No Homework (SS #32 will be done at school)
10/13- No School and No SS Quiz

We will be continuing our unit on European Exploration and Its Effects. Students will investigate explorers from different European countries and map the areas of the Western Hemisphere where they explored. They have been paired with a classmate and assigned an explorer to research and present to their classmates. Research presentations will take place this week.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
We will continue Chapter 3, "Mary Lives with Justice and Obedience," in our Word of Life workbooks. The students will come to know the work of the Blessed Trinity in the Annunciation of Mary, that Mary is the New Eve through her obedience of faith and participation in God's work of salvation, through the work of God in her life, Mary becomes our model of virtue, and how the liturgical season of Advent calls us to imitate Mary's obedience of faith.
