WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

Last week was a great start to our new daily routine! I have enjoyed having the 4th graders in Language Arts class (again)! In Language Arts, students will take morphology assessments with the focus on learning their prior knowledge of prefixes and suffixes. This is for me to gauge where they are to help guide my instruction. Morphology practice/instruction will be a part of our daily routine in a couple weeks. We will watch some videos explaining the history of the English language to help set the stage for all of the work we will do with spelling and morphology! We will continue working on our comprehension skill, using text evidence and prior knowledge to make inferences. Students learned that we make inferences about what an author doesn't tell us and that we need to support those with details from the text. Last week we kept our focus on fiction texts; we will mix in non-fiction this week.

HOMEWORK: You should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. You may keep track of this in your agenda (there is a yellow box for tracking minutes read). On Monday, the reading log for this week will post on google classroom.  It is a google form that should be completed every Thursday (due Friday) on Google Classroom. This week the task will be centered about asking and answering questions.

Math: Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class we are reviewing fraction equivalence and comparison. We will explore generating equivalent fractions with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size.  Students will rely on multiplication and division to create equivalency, while also representing each fraction with a model and proving their thinking.

Homework:

We are starting homework this week. Students should complete one SS lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. Students should take their books home and bring them back to school each day. We will check our lessons every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems. We will take a SS Quiz every Friday, starting this week. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work. Each quiz is 7 questions and will be a grade in Rediker.

8/28 Simple Solution Lesson #5

8/29 Simple Solution Lesson #6

8/30 Simple Solution Lesson #7

8/31 Simple Solution Lesson #8

9/1 SS Quiz #2

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush

We will be continuing our unit on European Exploration and Its Effects. Students will investigate explorers from different European countries and map the areas of the Western Hemisphere where they explored. They will be paired with a classmate and assigned an explorer to research and present to their classmates.

Religion: Mrs. Crush

We will continue reading A Long Walk to Water.  We will focus on the difficulties people face in Africa with water and how we, 5th graders, could help with this social justice issue.  Students will be answering questions on Google Classroom, as well as, we will discuss in class.

HW: 1st Trimester Service Hours+ Reflection due Wednesday, November 1.

Items Needed:

The students created jobs that they will be completing each week. Based on the job description, they will earn points on Class Dojo. Each Friday, the students will have the opportunity to turn in their points to purchase a variety of items. If you are able, please send in an item or two listed below.
