Week of 8/28 - 9/1

Hello 4th Grade Families!

The first few days of school went wonderfully! Students participated in several team building activities to set foundations for a strong classroom community. Students set up our classroom economy, made wallets, and determined our salary brackets. Students completed surveys about themselves, created personality balls, and focused on getting organized for our year. We did several group work activities to learn about respect and effective collaboration. I truly am so excited to see all that's in store for this year. I look forward to diving into content this week and continuing to start the year strong!

LA: MRS. PHELPS

This week we will begin switching classes! In Language Arts, students will take spelling and morphology assessments, etc. This is for me to gauge where they are to help guide my instruction. They will also get a crash course on the history of the English language, including its origin and why it can be so tricky sometimes! We will begin reading engaging literary and informational texts with a focus on using evidence from the text to make inferences about things the author doesn't explicitly tell us. This is an important thinking strategy for comprehension. Considering we are just meeting for the first time, still going over routines and procedures, and getting some assessments completed, we will work on this skill for awhile.

HOMEWORK: You should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. You may keep track of this in your agenda (there is a yellow box for tracking minutes read). On Monday, the reading log for this week will post on google classroom.  It is a google form that should be completed every Thursday (due Friday) on Google Classroom.

MATH: MRS. BENNETT

This week in Math class we will continue to explore our base-10 number system.  Using place value chips, students will recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. We will learn how to regroup and rename the numbers in different ways. For example:

Select all the correct ways to regroup and rename the number 720,000.

Homework:

Students should complete one SS lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. Students should take their books home and bring them back to school each day. We will check our lessons every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems before taking the quiz. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work. Each quiz is 7 questions and will be a grade in Rediker.

8/28 Simple Solution Lesson #5

8/29 Simple Solution Lesson #6

8/30 Simple Solution Lesson #7

8/31 Simple Solution Lesson #8

9/1 SS Quiz #2

SOCIAL STUDIES: MRS. CRUSH

We will continue our unit of Geography of the United States. Students will focus on the Northeast Region first.  They will learn about the land, climate, waterways, and landmarks in the Northeast.  Then, they will each choose a landmark to research and present. This project will be completed during class and the rubric will be shared when we begin our project.

RELIGION: MRS CRUSH

We will begin Chapter 1, "God's Loving Plan," in our Word of Life workbooks. In this chapter, students will discuss how to let the good things of this world lead them to God, reflect on how they will call upon God and pray to Him, learn that God is the source of all truth, discuss how to respond to those who seek to deceive us about the truths that come from God, discuss how to respond to God's invitation to communion, identify that God freely created us out of His own goodness to share His love with us, discuss practical ways to discover the truth, and identify that knowing and loving God is the only thing that can make us truly happy.

HW:  1st Trimester Service Hours + Reflection due Wednesday, Nov. 1
