WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

This past week we got our feet wet with vocabulary! Students were given 5 new words from the text we read in class. They created flash cards, did a few word learning activities throughout the week and took a vocabulary quiz on Friday. This was a PRACTICE quiz so they would be well aware of what the quizzes look like. I will address any concerns throughout this week. (Everyone will receive credit for completion.) This week is a short week, therefore, we will only have 4 words. There will be a quiz on Friday!

This week in class we will work on using details and literary elements in a story to determine theme. We will work on summarizing what we have read, including the key details. This is going to prepare us for future literature circles that we will participate in during novel studies.

HOMEWORK: You should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. On Monday, the reading log for this week will post on google classroom.  It is a google form that should be completed every Thursday (due Friday by 7:30am) on Google Classroom. This week the task will focus on summarizing.

**Vocabulary quiz Friday- study flash cards

Math: Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class we are taking the Math MAP test for the Fall. This will give us a benchmark for each student. It will allow us to better meet the needs of each student and pinpoint what they are ready to learn. Students will complete short sessions (20-30 minutes) Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If they need additional time, they can also work on the test Friday.

Homework:

Students should complete one SS lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. Students should take their books home and bring them back to school each day. We will check our lessons every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems before taking the quiz. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work. Each quiz is 7 questions and will be a grade in Rediker.

9/5 SS #9

9/6 SS #10

9/7 SS #12 (we will complete SS #11 at school due to short week)

9/8 SS Quiz #3

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush

We will be continuing our unit on European Exploration and Its Effects. Students will investigate explorers from different European countries and map the areas of the Western Hemisphere where they explored. They will be paired with a classmate and assigned an explorer to research and present to their classmates.

Religion: Mrs. Crush

We will continue reading A Long Walk to Water.  We will focus on the difficulties people face in Africa with water and how we, 5th graders, could help with this social justice issue.  Students will be answering questions on Google Classroom, as well as, we will discuss in class.

HW: Student Led Prayer 2: Blessing due Tuesday, September 12.  Students will have the opportunity to start on this during our class on Thursday.

1st Trimester Service Hours+ Reflection due Wednesday, November 1.

Items Needed:

The students created jobs that they will be completing each week. Based on the job description, they will earn points on Class Dojo. Each Friday, the students will have the opportunity to turn in their points to purchase a variety of items. If you are able, please send in an item or two listed below.
