Week of 8/21 - 8/25

Hello 4th Grade Families!

The first few days of school went wonderfully! Students participated in several team building activities to set foundations for a strong classroom community. Students set up our classroom economy, made wallets, and determined our salary brackets. Students completed surveys about themselves, created personality balls, and focused on getting organized for our year. We did several group work activities to learn about respect and effective collaboration. I truly am so excited to see all that's in store for this year. I look forward to diving into content this week and continuing to start the year strong!

LA: MRS. PHELPS

This week we will begin switching classes! In Language Arts, students will take spelling and morphology assessments, etc. This is for me to gauge where they are to help guide my instruction. They will also get a crash course on the history of the English language, including its origin and why it can be so tricky sometimes! We will begin reading engaging literary and informational texts with a focus on using evidence from the text to make inferences about things the author doesn't explicitly tell us. This is an important thinking strategy for comprehension. Considering we are just meeting for the first time, still going over routines and procedures, and getting some assessments completed, we will work on this skill for awhile.

HOMEWORK: You should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. You may keep track of this in your agenda (there is a yellow box for tracking minutes read). On Monday, the reading log for this week will post on google classroom.  It is a google form that should be completed every Thursday (due Friday) on Google Classroom.

MATH: MRS. BENNETT

We are excited to get our first full week under our belt in math class! We are continuing to get organized and learn our new routines. This week we will begin to learn about our Base-10 Number System. Students should recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. We will do some activities to explore this essential understadning!

Homework:

We are starting homework this week. Students should complete one SS lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. Students should take their books home and bring them back to school each day. We will check our lessons every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems. We will take a SS Quiz every Friday, starting this week. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work. Each quiz is 7 questions and will be a grade in Rediker.

8/21 Simple Solution Lesson #1

8/22 Simple Solution Lesson #2

8/23 Simple Solution Lesson #3

8/24 Simple Solution Lesson #4

8/25 SS Quiz #1

SOCIAL STUDIES: MRS. CRUSH

We will begin our unit of Geography of the United States. Students will understand that the United States has a diverse geography and various maps can be used to represent and examine the geography.  They will identify and map major physical features, including mountains, rivers, lakes, and large bodies of water. They will also examine climate and vegetation maps to explore the relationship between physical features and vegetation/climate.

RELIGION: MRS CRUSH

We will begin the school year creating Student Led Prayers.  Each class, a different student will begin our Religion/Social Studies lesson with a prayer.  My goal is to excite and allow the students to learn how to pray, and give them the opportunity to pray for things they feel are important to them.  Class time will be given to begin their prayers. A few examples will be posted on Google Classroom as guides.   Each student will create about 5-7 prayers this year.

HW: Student Led Prayer due Thursday, August 24. Class time will be given to the students to begin and possibly finish.

1st Trimester Service Hours + Reflection due Wednesday, Nov. 1
