Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

Great job to all the students on completing the Math and Reading MAP tests. They have one more left, Language Usage, and it will be taken during our class time on Tuesday and Wednesday (Thursday is available for anyone who needs to finish up).

This week in Language Arts we have a lot going on! We are beginning the gradual progression into our full Language Arts schedule and we will begin small groups on the days that time allows. The small groups will be focused on spelling rules, following the Orton Gillingham curriculum. Everyone has been assessed and the data has been used to group students, as they all have different depths of knowledge when it comes to spelling. I know this will be a great use of our time, as encoding and decoding are essential to literacy success.

Our comprehension skill of the week is retelling and finding main idea based on the key details in the text. We will learn strategies for finding the main idea of a story and how to use details to support our claim. It is important students know the main idea is what the text is mostly about and not a retelling of events. There is a difference!

HOMEWORK: I have decided to discontinue reading logs as homework for the time being. This does not mean there will never be reading homework, this just means the weekly reading log will not be expected. While I still encourage and hope students are reading at least 20 minutes outside of school hours, I do not foresee an effective way to keep track of this. If students have homework from me, they will know and it will be written in their agendas on Monday.

**NO VOCABULARY QUIZ**

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week in math class, we are learning how to model multiplication on a number line. Students are using a digital number line to model different multiplication equations. We are focusing what each factor represents. The first factors always represents the number of groups, while the second factor represents the group size. We will also talk about how each group we add to the number line lands on the multiples of the group size.

To be challenged, some students are also working on multiplying 2-digit numbers and estimating products.

We will be ready to take a test on Module 1 next Wednesday 9/27. Students have access to a practice test on HMH Dashboard and access to a study guide on Google Classroom. They are not required to complete the practice test or study guide, but are encouraged to use it as a study tool! I will give some class time for students to complete the study guide. The test will be a Google Form and is worth 25 points. The test will cover the following topics:

Homework:

9/18 SS #17

9/19 SS #18

9/20 SS #19

9/21- SS #20

9/22- SS Quiz #5

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

In Social Studies, we will continue our Geography, Humans, and the Environment Unit. We started to study the different parts of a map on Friday and will continue this week.  Once we have learned the different parts of the Map, students will begin their "Barefoot Island" project. Students will be using their knowledge on the parts of a map and creating their own island.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

We will complete Chapter 1, "The Invitation to Communion," in our Word of Life workbooks. In this chapter, students will identify what it means to be in communion with God, discuss how God speaks to them in the Bible, identify that Jesus is the Word of God, who gently knocks at the door of their hearts, discuss how to put God first in their lives, identify that our character is the kind of person we are and that virtues are the part of our character that enables us to do what is good with ease and joy, discuss how God's plan in our lives is to be in communion with God so that we can live lives of virtue, identify the themes of the Old and New Testament, and locate Scripture verses in the Bible.

Later in the week, we will learn about our Saint of Month: St. Matthew.  We will focus on his conversion and his call from God.

Open Book Test: Tuesday, September 19 on Chapter 1, "The Invitation to Communion." pg 3-14. (Study highlighted word(s), bold vocabulary words, Chapter 1 Review, activities, or any drawings inside their workbook).

*Students will be able to use their books for the first test. I strongly encourage the students to still study for the test. .
