3rd Grade Christmas Around the World!

We are excited to share that 3rd grade will be participating in Christmas Around the World. Each student has an assigned country and will be conducting research in both Social Studies and Technology class periods. They then will present their information on Wednesday, December 13 from 9:30-10:05a.m. to a few classes. We would also like to invite you to join us in celebrating Christmas Around the World!

The students have been asked to either wear traditional clothing from their country or bring in a traditional dish to share for others to try. If choosing the traditional dish, please have all the ingredients listed for those who have allergies.  In class, the students have been told that we are not asking for them to go out and buy traditional clothing, to try and brainstorm with the items you may already have at home.

***The students will bring their traditional clothing or dish on Wednesday, December 13.***

We have stressed to the students to use their class time wisely to prevent them from having to complete at home. The due date for their project is the morning of December 8. Prior to Christmas Around the World on December 13, the students will present during Social Studies and Technology to allow for practice and feedback.

Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

I am so excited for students to dive into their research and planning for their informational text structure magazine project! By now, they should have chosen a topic and completed the description graphic organizer with general facts about their topic. This week, they will continue to use research and prior knowledge to complete the other 4 graphic organizers (compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution, and order/sequence). These are the planning pages they will use to draft their paragraphs from in the following week. They will have ample in class time to work on this and I will try to meet and check in with them throughout the week on their progress.

While at school, students will look up information on their topic on kiddle.co or kidzsearch.com. Please feel free to encourage them to work on this at home if they need extra time. These papers should always stay in their "right back to school" pocket of their folder. Many of them seem really excited; that is one of many things I love about this class!

In Morphology, we will be adding 2 new suffixes (-est meaning most and -er meaning more). Last week, we learned that -er can mean "one who" but as a comparative suffix, -er can also mean more.  After this week, we will not add any more morphemes to our cards until after Christmas break!

No vocab for the next two weeks! I want to be able to dedicate more class time to our writing project and since this may require homework for some; I have decided it is best to resume vocabulary after break. We will play some fun review games that include our most challenging words from previous weeks.

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week in math class we are starting a new module- Understand Perimeter. Students will explain how to find the perimeter of a polygon using a ruler to measure in inches and centimeters. We will start to design a Gingerbread House blueprint! Students will have to calculate the area and perimeter of their gingerbread blueprints and answer the Essential Question: How can I design a gingerbread house that doesn't exceed 342 square centimeters and has a perimeter of less than 125 cm?

*Before Christmas Break, we will bring our blueprints to life by our designs using graham crackers and candy! Below is a signup genius link. If you are able, please sign up to bring an item or two! I need all items by  Monday 12/18.*

*I have been updating my Google Site recently. If you go to the "Math Resource" tab, I have added help videos for different math skills. These videos are made by me, so you can see exactly how I am teaching a skill in class. Please check these out and use them as needed. I will be adding new videos throughout the year!*

We will be focusing the next few weeks on Advent. The students will be creating an Advent Christmas Tree to help know that our participation in Advent prepares us for Christ's Second Coming and for the celebration of His first coming at Christmas.  They will learn that the third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, a day of rejoicing.
