WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

LA: MRS. PHELPS

Our comprehension skill of the week will be switching from summarizing and theme in fiction texts, to finding main idea based on the key details in non-fiction texts. We will learn strategies for finding the main idea of a text or article and how to use details to support our claim. It is important students know the main idea is about one sentence that tells what the text is mostly about and not a retelling of every detail. I look forward to students reading non-fiction texts on interesting topics. This is a great skill that transfers really well into writing explanatory pieces.

In class, we are now doing morphology every day of the week and building a card set of prefixes, suffixes, Greek bases and Latin bases. We have started something called the "3 part drill" that we do 3 times a week. It involves auditory, visual and kinesthetic ways to review and learn morphemes. This week, we will add the -ed suffix (as well as a couple other well known ones for review) and this will be assessed on the vocabulary quiz.

Homework: Study for Vocabulary quiz on Friday!

MATH: MRS. BENNETT

This week in Math class we are working on solving comparison scenarios. Students will use a bar model to visualize the scenario. Students will label the infomration given and what part of the model is unknown. Based on where the unknown value is placed, students will either add or subtract. We will progress to writing our own comparison word problems using addition and subtraction to compare.

SOCIAL STUDIES: MRS. CRUSH

We will continue our unit of Geography of the United States. Students will focus on the Southeast Region second.  They will learn about the land, climate, waterways, and landmarks in the Southeast.  Students will have a similar landmark project as they did for the Southeast region.

RELIGION: MRS CRUSH

We will complete Chapter 2, "Faith, Reason, and the Eternal Law," in our Word of Life workbooks. In this chapter, students will know that the eternal law is God's divine plan of love for all creation, realize that by following God's moral laws, they can live with true happiness, realize that by exploring the world and asking questions, they can understand the natural law, and understand that faith and reason are not opposed to each other because both came from God.
