3-5th Service Hours Directions
Objective:
Students in grades 3-5 are required to complete 2 hours of community service each trimester (for a total of 6 hours per year), with at least two different service experiences. These hours should be recorded on this Google Classroom assignment or on paper and turned in by the end of the trimester. Each trimester, the student will also include a written reflection that describes the experience and how it helped you live out the Gospel message. This will be completed on a Google Classroom assignment.
Service is more than just an activity—it is a ministry. It is a way to actively care for others and live out your faith by serving them. Service is spiritual work that helps us discover God and encounter Christ through those we serve. It is putting faith into action and creating connections with others by living the Gospel message.
Total Hours:
You are expected to complete 2 hours of service each trimester, for a total of 6 hours for the year.
Diverse Experiences:
You must have at least two different service experiences for each trimester. Examples include:
Sandwich Sundays
Altar server duties
Nursing home visits
Volunteering at your school, parish, or for a local, national, or global cause
Helping family, friends, or neighbors
Written Reflection:
After each trimester, students will write a brief reflection on what you did, how you helped, and what you learned about living the Gospel message through your actions. Your reflection should be based on one or more of the following questions, which you may choose from:
Describe what you have learned about yourself as a result of your service.
What have you learned about yourself?
What have you learned about your community?
What impact did you have on your community?
Did you learn a new skill that you may have?
Describe a person you’ve encountered in the community who made a strong impression on you, positive or negative.
What learning occurred for you in this experience? How can you apply this learning?
Complete this sentence: "Because of my service learning, I am..."
Submission:
Google Classroom Option: You can submit your service hours and reflections directly through this Google Classroom assignment.
Paper Option: If you prefer, you can write out your service hours and reflection on paper. Please make sure it is neat and legible, and turn it into Mrs.Crush on the day it is due.
Service hours and reflections will be graded, so be sure to follow all instructions carefully and complete both the service hours and written reflection. Late submissions or incomplete work may impact your grade.
If you're unsure about an opportunity for service or have questions about what counts, feel free to contact your child’s religion teacher or the principal. They will be happy to guide you.
If you are completing your service hours on paper, you can pick up a Service Record Form from Mrs.Crush. Be sure to submit the form along with your written reflection.
Remember:
Service is about faith connections. It is about putting your love for Christ into action by helping others. Each experience you have is a chance to grow closer to God and to live out His teachings in your daily life.
