WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

April 8th- April 19th

We are learning figurative language through poetry. I am excited to start using poetry to teach about ways poets and writers can use specific language to help portray feelings and paint pictures in the mind of the reader. As a kid, I loved to read Shel Silverstein books and write my own poetry. Last week, we learned about figurative language including; imagery, simile, metaphors and personification. This week, we focus on idiom, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and hyperbole. We will also be discussing common characteristics of poetry, such as, form, rhyme, meter, etc.

Homework: Read assigned pages and complete job sheet- Friday

**Figurative Language Quiz moved to Wednesday, May 3rd due to MAP testing and needing more time to review.*

**May 8th is our field trip the Muhammad Ali Center.**

Math: Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class we are working on multiplying two mixed numbers. Students will start out by using area model to see a pictorial representation of multiplying two mixed numbers. Students will then learn how to turn both fractions into improper fractions. We will also learn how to cross reduce before multiplying, so the product is easier to work with at the end. Students will work on solving real-world situations involving multiplying whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers.  We will finish our chapter on Multiplying Fractions and will be ready to take a test next week. There will be a study guide posted to help students prepare ahead of time!

We are continuing to check on our greenhouses each week! Students are graphing the growth on a coordinate plane every Monday. Hopefully we see some sprouts soon!

Homework:

4/15 - SS #105

4/16- SS #106

4/17- SS #107

4/18- SS #108

4/19- SS Quiz

Our greenhouses are officially outside! We planted tomatoes, cilantro, and balsam flowers! We will track and graph their growth over time and assess which greenhouse design was the most effective!

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush

Students will begin their Central and South America Country projects. We discussed the four different parts last Friday. The students will have part of Mondays class and Tuesday to complete Part 1: America's Persuasive. If not completed during class, this will become homework.

Part 1: America's Persuasive due Wednesday, April 17.

Students will also advance our learning about Lewis and Clark to prepare our trip to Big Bone Lick State Historic Site. On our field trip, students will be hiking and experience a Lew and Clark Mock Expedition.

Religion: Mrs. Crush

We will begin Chapter 17, "Jesus' Apostles Share in God's Work," in our Word of Life workbooks.  Students will be asked to define the four vocabulary words on notebook paper. This will be completed during Monday's class. If not completed during class, it may be homework. In this chapter, students will come to know the significance of Jesus' action of washing His Apostles' feet at the Last Supper, learn that through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, men are called to imitate Christ in laying down their lives in service to the world, and learn the words and external actions used within the Rite of Ordination of Priests.

3rd Trimester Service Hours + Reflection due Wednesday, May 15
