Class overview

World Language Class at Ascension is a course designed to expose students to the sounds and culture of four languages: French, Japanese, German, and Spanish.  Students will develop speaking and listening skills over basic topics. Limited age-appropriate writing opportunities in grades 3 - 5 will also be introduced.

About me

Bonjour! Konnichiwa! Guten Tag! Hola!

My name is Shannon Dunlap, and I am so excited to introduce foreign languages in an exploratory course at Ascension this year. I am a newly-retired teacher from Indiana where I taught for 30 years at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Over my career, I have taught exploratory foreign language, French, and world history. I have lived and studied extensively in France. Currently, I write and develop French curriculum for an online learning platform, mentor new teachers,  and teach this course at Ascension on Fridays. My husband and I have five sons, and we most recently welcomed a new grandchild.

Student Resources

Students have joined my google classroom. On Google Classroom, I make a post each Friday with the lesson plan for the day. In the classwork section, I post fun practice videos or games that reinforce what we are learning in the classroom. Here are the links to those items as well!

SPANISH PRACTICE

Grade Policy in World Language Class – 3rd to 5th Grade

Our grades:

Classroom participation and classwork (50%)

Classroom Conduct (30%)

Quizzes (20%).

There will be two very brief quizzes (usually 5 items – students circle a picture or maybe write a number, for example) per trimester. Most of the time these will be listening comprehension. There will be a speaking test or two this year (greetings or counting).

We practice for quizzes in class, and there is no homework assigned at these grade levels. If students do poorly on the first quiz attempt, they are given a second opportunity.  Playing the video practices will help your child. All students are enrolled in Google Classroom for foreign language. You can see what we do each day there on the daily calendar in the stream. If you go to Google Classwork, there are practice videos.

Each student has a folder where they will keep all of their materials for the class. I will be sending them home at the end of the year.
