WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

LA: MRS. PHELPS

Great job to all the students on completing the Math and Reading MAP tests. They have one more left, Language Usage, and it will be taken during our class time on Tuesday and Wednesday (Thursday is available for anyone who needs to finish up).

This week in Language Arts we have a lot going on! We are beginning the gradual progression into our full Language Arts schedule and we will begin small groups on the days that time allows. The small groups will be focused on spelling rules, following the Orton Gillingham curriculum. Everyone has been assessed and the data has been used to group students, as they all have different depths of knowledge when it comes to spelling. I know this will be a great use of our time, as encoding and decoding are essential to literacy success.

Our comprehension skill of the week is summarizing a text and determining theme based on details from the text. We are working hard on knowing the difference between main idea and theme. The main idea is about one sentence that describes what the story is mostly about, while the theme is the moral lesson the author wants us to take away from the story. There is a big emphasis on being able to state details from the text that support our thinking.

HOMEWORK: I have decided to discontinue reading logs as homework for the time being. This does not mean there will never be reading homework, this just means the weekly reading log will not be expected. While I still encourage and hope students are reading at least 20 minutes outside of school hours, I do not foresee an effective way to keep track of this. If students have homework from me, they will know and it will be written in their agendas on Monday.

**NO VOCABULARY QUIZ**

MATH: MRS. BENNETT

This week in math class students are continuing to work on rounding large numbers to any place value. We are focusing on rounding 5-6 digit numbers to each place value- tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, and hundred thousands. Students are utilizing an open number line to help them prove their thinking. Several students are being challenged by rounding decimal amounts. This has led to conversations about decimals place value and connecting decimals to fractions.

We will be ready to take a test on Module 1 this Friday 9/22. Students have access to a practice test on HMH Dashboard. They are not required to complete the practice test, but are encouraged to use it as a study tool! The test will cover the following topics:

Homework:

9/18 SS #17

9/19 SS #18

9/20 SS #19

9/21- SS #20

9/22- No SS Quiz - Module Test

SOCIAL STUDIES: MRS. CRUSH

We will continue our unit of Geography of the United States. Students will focus on the Northeast Region first.  They will learn about the land, climate, waterways, and landmarks in the Northeast.  Students have been busy researching and creating their Google Slides to present their landmark projects this week.

RELIGION: MRS CRUSH

We will complete Chapter 1, "God's Loving Plan," in our Word of Life workbooks. In this chapter, students will discuss how to let the good things of this world lead them to God, reflect on how they will call upon God and pray to Him, learn that God is the source of all truth, discuss how to respond to those who seek to deceive us about the truths that come from God, discuss how to respond to God's invitation to communion, identify that God freely created us out of His own goodness to share His love with us, discuss practical ways to discover the truth, and identify that knowing and loving God is the only thing that can make us truly happy.

Later in the week, we will learn about our Saint of Month: St. Matthew.  We will focus on his conversion and his call from God.

Open Book Test: Tuesday, September 19 on Chapter 1, "God's Loving Plan." pg 3-14. (Study highlighted word(s), bold vocabulary words, Chapter 1 Review, activities, or any drawings inside their workbook).

*Students will be able to use their books for the first test. I strongly encourage the students to still study for the test.
