Top 10 Ways to be a Model Student in Mrs. Huish’s Class
# 10: Arrive prepared for class: all work finished and printed, in your seat on time, materials gathered, personal needs cared for (think about what this means… ), etc.
Materials: writing utensil, book, computer, water bottle (ONLY water), earbuds, some non-distracting way of listening to music so you can concentrate
# 9: Ask to leave class for emergencies only. See me before class if you have a “red-flag” situation going on.
#8: Know what the SMHS Handbook contains and realize that I do and will follow it thoroughly.
#7: Take academic risks.
#6: Communicate clearly and precisely, whether face-to-face, via email, or in written schoolwork.
#5: Work as though your life depends on it (in reality, it does and will, as you move into adulthood).
#4: Advocate for yourself. Having a hard time with the class work, or my teaching style, or the lighting? Please speak up.
#3: Help yourself. You are on the brink of full adulthood. You are now responsible for yourself and your learning. Before helping you, I will make sure you’ve helped yourself. Once you’ve exhausted all the ways of helping yourself, I will absolutely, positively help you with whatever need you have.
I am responsible for setting up systems so you can help yourself. Specifically: setting up the classroom with supplies and posters of my contact information; keeping an up-to-date web site; clearly communicating my expectations of you and your work; and teaching are my responsibilities. Please use the resources I’ve set up before asking for help. If you come and ask me about a missed lesson or assignment, where the scissors are, what my web site address is, etc. I will ask you: “Have you used your resources?”
#2: Attend school. It is much easier to learn and succeed if you Just.Show.Up.
#1: RESPECT. Show it for: the learning process, academic risk (see #4), our school, my desk and its contents, each other, and yourself. Be the kind of person you’d want to meet!
