Monday: 2Black, Tuesday: 2Green & 4Green
- We reviewed historical context and social commentary.
- We looked again at Unit 2, Embedded Assessment #1's poster and essential questions.
- I pulled out the big poster paper / sticky chart of social issues.
- I asked folks to choose their top four issues that they'd "go to the mat" over (after checking that everyone understands that phrase...).
- We had a round-robin sharing of the issues.
- I then asked everyone to choose the top issue that they could argue all day.
- Another round-robin sharing happened, thereby creating groups based on common interests.
- Next, I asked students to work together in their groups to fill out the chart associated with #4 of Activity 2.18. An essential question to determine underlying, universal issues is: "What is the one point that people just cannot agree on, within this social conflict?"
- Lastly, students were asked to start brainstorming other time periods with parallel social issues (see chart for examples).
Homework:
read 2.6, just the first page
go back to 2.5 and fill in the graphic organizers for blocking possibilities
Wednesday: 2Black, Thursday: 2Green & 4Green
We will:
- Check homework (see above)
- Continue research about potential historical context "parallel settings" > This process could be fraught with frustration, as well as trial and error. Expect to have to chat with me a lot during this process. Perfectly natural!
- Choose one-two parallel setting(s) and do "historical context" research (see image of my board)
- Put all the research in a common GDoc named U2EA1-GroupName (group name = 2Black terrorism, 2Green poverty, etc.) and make sure all group members have share rights. Also make sure you share it with me.
- Use the Modernized Freytag's Pyramid to sketch out the action in your scene
- Next, think about what kinds of characteristics would help you tell your story
- Make a character list that paints a full picture of your scene's characters
Academic Initiative progress check ten minutes before the end of class for:
- a clearly articulated conflict that faces society
- at least one parallel setting, if not two-three
- preliminary research on our "historical context" questions
- notes on the Freytag's pyramid
- a character list
