We:

• made up names for our three instructional tracks:

Lila Maus (MiD & AV)

Los pingüinos negros (DC, ET, AusM, VD, EO, AD, CK, SB, BR)

#You Only Live Once (a.k.a., #yolo) (MacD, AdrM, JC, BB, TH)

• had a discussion about what we need in our classroom for it to function well with three distinct instructional tracks. To do this, students did a QuickWrite using the sentence stems, I need... and I will...

Example: I need quiet in my classroom to be able to focus on my work. (Therefore) I will do my best to listen more and ask questions only when I really don't understand something.

• The students went over their Activity 1.8 together, and then I joined them to talk about what was easy for them, what challenged them, and then we discussed how they figured out the less clear answers (the ones that required that the students infer parts of the vignettes, such as what sort of effect getting cut had on the futures of the men who'd been interviewed).

Homework: finish the graphic organizer that goes with Activity 1.8
