SATs are out on May 8!

On May 8 and 9, please check your SAT scores. Please fill out the form with your PSAT scores, your SAT scores, and any instructional strategies / philosophies that helped your efforts to improve your scores.

If you cannot login to your College Board account, please call 866/756-7346 (our school's College Board school # is 200-505) to get your Username/Password. It's okay with me if you use your cell phone to do this (be reasonable and act like young adults, please). If you use it outside my door, please use the orange "this student is calling College Board" sign, as my permanent pass. The sub will have this.

By May 10, I will have made a full Societal Conflict Project so that you'll have an example to work from.

We'll also have a stack of newspapers to buzz through, to get a real sense of what this project is heading toward.

Fahrenheit 451 read day. Setting context.

Goal: Finishing our reading of Fahrenheit 451 & preparing for a Socratic Seminar (video will be uploaded here so you can see how it will be organized).

There are three themes to Fahrenheit 451: censorship, technology versus nature, and knowledge versus ignorance

I would suggest keeping track of your annotations by the first three and last three words of your quotation, like this:

"I pledge allegiance ... justice, for all."

On May 22, lesson specifics for 2Black:

2Black: Could someone go to my room and grab the extra paper copies from my teaching desk at the front of the room? These are for borrowing, as I only have a limited number of paper copies.

Your jobs today are to:

• understand the historical context of Fahrenheit 451 - Why would Bradbury have been inspired to write this novel, based on his background and what had happened in his young adulthood?; and
• read and annotate for the themes and seminar discussion questions, listed above.

• Work on your Writing a Personal Essay
  • Remember: this is a warm-up for your college essay, so you may also look at the 2017-2018 Common App prompts - if your mid-range & stretch schools use Common App - to see if you can overlap the prompts to the best of your ability. I'll only need to know if you have done so, thus tweaking how I provide feedback to you on it. :)
• Share your draft with me, through the Google Classroom assignment (an Academic Initiative score will be entered - 0 or 100)
• You may go to the hall and borrow items from the Peer Editing Toolbox, but you MUST sign the pens out on the clipboard - as well as signing them back in (I'm already missing a purple pen from the #1 box - Grumble, Grumble). I will charge for replacement pens, as I bought these with a grant!
  • NOTE: If you haven't yet taken the Write, Revise, Repeat! survey, please do so before borrowing the editing pens / clipboards. GEAR-UP requires that I gather pre- and post- data, to see if my idea is working. :)
