Creative Writing Course Expectations

Characteristics of the Course: We will focus on the crafts of memoir, exposition, poetry, and fiction. We will learn about these forms via:
• journal writing
reading important exemplars, from masters of the craft
• workshop approach
• community of writers (“critical friends” network)
• prewriting, drafting, sharing, revision, publication
• work on literary portfolio
• primarily memoir with the possibility of some focus on fiction and poetry
Grading
• academic initiative: sharing of own work, feedback on others’ work = 20% of quarter grades
• drafting: writing in class based upon sparks and student suggestions = 30% of quarter grades
• revision, evident in portfolios: amount of work, variety (willingness to experiment) = 30% of quarter grades
• work on publications: selecting, editing, typing, illustration, selling = 20% of quarter grades
• Your final will be a published portfolio of your creative writing pieces = 20% of the semester grade
