Yet another intense one, here in Room 210!
We started out our day with the standard 10 minute automatic write, followed by semi-voluntary sharing (I asked to hear from folks who hadn't yet shared). We gave specific feedback to the authors about the words / phrases that struck us and affected us. WS, TH, and LS shared. GREAT stuff. Ideas, emotions. I shared my automatic write about my husband's buddy, Chad.
This piece, which is far from done, led to a discussion and sharing about living life with passion. We discussed the importance of using our passions to feel truly alive and how that translates into compelling writing.
After that, I asked you all to complete the following concrete assignment: choose one of your four pieces (except for you, JG! You have an excuse to only have three thus far... :) ) to into in a deep way. In other words, look at your writing, find a part that keeps pushing at you and bothering you. Chances are you're bothered because you haven't told the entire story.
Imagine that I will be reading your work: apply the WWHA principle: What Would Huish Ask? I am a curious, talkative, and intense teacher. I will ask questions until you need to run to the bubbler and guzzle down as much water as you can consume. Anticipate my questions, imagining that you have a Huish Filter in your mind. "I can imagine Mrs. Huish asking these questions here, suggesting that I add more detail here, etc."
Homework: choose your piece, finish it in your own writing (tell the WHOLE story), and bring that rough/hand-written draft to Thursday's class (9-11-14).
Next time:
I will not be here for Thursday's class. Please use your time to type your finished piece and share it to me at ahernhuish@rsu73.org, send it to me in an email at hahernhuish@rsu73.org, or print it and put it in the 1G collection basket.
