Career Pathways*

This course is designed to encourage freshmen to explore their academic, personal and career goals. Students will address several units of study, including: Values, Goals, Decision Making and Planning in Unit 1; Career Exploration in Unit 2; Financial Literacy in Unit 3; Job Preparedness in Unit 4; as well as an ongoing unit in Academic Excellence related to study skills, time management, and learning strategies.
Expectations
Student’s grade will depend on being prepared, good time management, class participation, and attendance. Deadlines for projects must be met or points will be deducted from the project grade.
Group work will be expected, so collaborating with classmates, leadership skills, communication, and responsibility will be important.
Most work is done in class, so any absences will significantly affect your progress.

Requirements
A 3-ring binder is recommended for this class. It will be important that this binder is kept well-organized, as all tests and quizzes will be “open notes.”
Students must also come prepared with a pencil, paper, and any assignments, daily.

Career Pathways Syllabus
Unit 1
Self-Discovery
- Personal assessment and identifying traits of successful people
- Values exploration, including Universal Values of our society
- Goal setting and identifying short and long term goals- students will write personal goals using SMART guidelines
- Using the Decision Making Process for problem solving
Unit 2
Career Exploration
- Types of employment and how career choice will influence students’ futures
- Identifying and improving skills that increase employability
- CHOICES program online to identify personal skills and interests, as well as potential post-graduation goals and how to achieve them
- Students will explore a career of possible interest and create a presentation to educate others about it
- Presentations by community members will allow students to gain insight into careers and expectations for life after high school: a professional, a civil servant, a small business owner, a self-employed community member, an entry-level worker, a member of the military, & a college student
Unit 3
Money Management
- Evaluate personal spending habits and learn the basics of budgeting income and expenses
- Create a personal budget
- Explore the constraints of life on a minimum-wage income
- Discuss basics of banking, particularly saving for financial goals, the risks and impact of identity theft and the importance of good credit (A representative of Otis Federal Credit Union will speak with the students)
Unit 4
Job Preparation
- Identify the information required to complete a job application
- Complete a resume and identify personal references
- Participate in a mock interview
Unit 5
Academic Excellence
- Maintain a student agenda to manage assignments and deadlines
- Explore personality types, learning styles, and study skills to maximize academic success
- Practice time management strategies
