finished 1.7 in class - I felt that I hadn't given you enough time with the images to do a reasonable job outside of class;
did a Catch-up session to be sure that I have all the academic work that I'm expecting you to have in for the October 1 Progress Report deadline. I also explained what you need to do if you didn't get a perfect score on your academic vocab quizzes (only 5 of you were AbFabPerfect on your quizzes - highest percentage of all of my 9/10 classes, though...);
At this point, I handed back all of the Voices of Modern Culture academic vocab quizzes and gave HUGE kudos to the five awesome people who earned PERFECT scores. :)
started 1.8 (Culture and Literature - "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes);
I read the poem aloud, explained that Winston-Salem and Durham are in North Carolina, and that they are tobacco towns. We discussed what the cultural perspective must be like for a boy who grew up in North Carolina to be the only black student in NYC.
I asked you all to consider what you would write about were I to give you the assignment that Hughes writes about in Lines 2-5. We Pair-Shared this in a quick fashion (1-5 words only).
Homework:
finish 1.7, if you didn't do so in class;
complete a Quickwrite for the assignment that Hughes outlines in lines 2-5 of "Theme for English B"; and
complete the TWIST Graphic Organizer for "Theme for English B" (page 20).
